Now at age 75, after many years of restoring old race cars, it"s time to sell off all my accumulated stock of parts.
As Usual
ALL reasonable offers considered
NEW to the MARKET ........ just found in March, stored 40 years
Very RARE Ranger Aircraft Engine powered race car
This is a Big Car , the size of INDY Champ Cars
and has the largest Engine raced in the 50"s ... a 7.2 L
with tremendous torque.
This is a very good opportunity to acquire one of the very desirable Vintage Big Car Sprinters with the awesome and rare Ranger 440 cu inch Overhead Cam aircraft engines, which produces over 400 pounds of torque, but weighs only 375 pounds
1950 IMCA Big Car Sprinter Ranger 440 cu inch Monoposto PreWar Class racer
The cockpit foot area is larger than most, making a conversion to Road Racing easier.
This is one of 8 of these fabulous race cars originally built with one of these light 6 cylinder aircraft engines that has over 400 pounds of torque, designed to compete with the Offenhausers in the U.S.A. IMCA Sprint Car Series of the 50"s. Only 3 are known to exist today.
These 440 cu inch Ranger aircraft engined Big Cars were the most popular choice that was able to compete successfully with the Offys on MidWestern tracks of Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, and other neighboring States. We have copies of some of the race results from that period.
Originally from Kansas Missouri, this Sprinter last raced at Carrolton Ohio in 1974, and was later taken to Phoenix, Arizona where the owner retired. Stored in Arizona for over 40 + years, it was found and acquired from the estate, after the owner died. The car appears to be complete, except for the old fuel tank . It includes two Stromberg 2 choke downdraft carbuettors, in/out transmission, driveshaft and original front bumper. The motor turns smoothly, and appears complete with dual magnetos, and the dual plug ignition system appears complete. This is an overhead cam motor, and the cam was not located by the man"s Estate, and will need a replacement.
We have located an aircraft restorer that has numerous spare engines and parts that are available, as these motors are now often used by private aircraft.
There is one Ranger similar to this that is actively on track, and another in a museum in the US. These motors have tremendous torque and acceleration, and the driver of the car that is active, said it was a most exciting car to drive.
The rear axle appears complete. It has 3.5 : 1 ratio and hydraulic brakes.
If you are seriously interested in a very rare and desirable piece of American Racing Big Car History, this car is certainly worth your consideration.
Several pictures of the car are posted, but we also have many other pictures, the oldest being of the car in 1964.
We sell many of these Prewar spec oval track cars have been converted for Vintage Road Racing, and this would be a great candidate for that use.
The cockpit foot area is larger than most, making the conversion easier.
This Ranger is one of several cars in the shop that we continue to work on , and if not sold, the price will change as work continues
many of the similar oval track cars of this period have been restored for Road Racing in the US, Europe, and around the World.
The chassis design and workmanship is VERY good, and this will make a great car for prewar Road Racing, especially on tracks with long straights
Other cars , include the ex Karl Flessa "59 Bugeye race car, a "65 Morgan +4, a "57 Mercury Montclair w/Tpke engine, the ex Bill Leonhardt/ Dan Gallant "57 Volvo 444 race car (oldest Volvo race car still actively racing ), 59"LaDawri Daytona 292 T"Bird w 3 deuces, a "60 Lotus 7 Series1, , the ex John Helms Fiat 124, spider race car, "72 TE27 Corolla Vintage race car,a"52 BucklerMk10 TaylorAlloyBody, the original Fiberfab Factory Azteca mid-engine Corvair/Porsche 356 base , a"58 Turner 803, a PreWar Ranger 440 Aircraft engined race car, a "29 Studebaker Lt Six Boattail speedster, several Vintage race car rolling chassis(s), bodies, and numerous other parts cars and cars for restoration..as well as a 4000 sq ft building full of Vintage parts.
